Overview

While many resources teach food protection procedures, employees often struggle to apply this knowledge in real-world contexts. This scenario-based eLearning module was designed to bridge that gap, helping food service workers practice critical safety behaviors in realistic kitchen situations.

Analyze

I began by interviewing subject matter experts, including a chef, deli manager, and restaurant owner. They shared common errors they had witnessed, health inspection citations, and challenges with new employees who had completed training but still found it difficult to apply food safety knowledge on the job. These insights highlighted the need for scenario-driven practice rather than content-heavy instruction.

Design

Guided by Cathy Moore’s Map It: The Hands-on Guide to Strategic Training Design, I used the action mapping process to define the performance problem and identify high-priority actions. This module focuses on five of those actions, with additional training solutions planned to address the rest.

I developed a text-based storyboard with realistic scenarios rooted in SME insights. From there, I created visual mockups in Adobe XD and Illustrator, sourcing and customizing Freepik vectors for characters and settings. Iterating in XD allowed me to refine layout, scale, and visual hierarchy before creating a detailed visual storyboard that specified text, graphics, and animation notes.

Develop

I built an interactive prototype to test functionality and gathered stakeholder feedback before moving into full development. Relying on the visual storyboard and prototype, I finalized the full module, ensuring alignment between real-world performance goals and engaging eLearning design.

Result

The final product is a scenario-based eLearning experience that helps food service employees practice applying food safety procedures in realistic contexts. By centering on authentic tasks and SME-driven scenarios, the module strengthens knowledge transfer and builds learner confidence in high-stakes workplace situations.
